John Amos, famous for his role as James Evans Sr. on Good Times, passed away in Los Angeles on August 21 at the age of 84. His death, attributed to natural causes, was publicly announced by his son, K.C. Amos, on October 1.

Despite the shock and confusion, Shannon wrote that there’s a small comfort in knowing her father is “finally free,” but admitted that navigating this difficult period has been overwhelming. “This should be a time to honor and celebrate his life, but we are still grappling with waves of emotions and uncertainties surrounding his passing.”

The circumstances surrounding John Amos’ death have been further complicated by a bitter family feud. A feature by The Hollywood Reporter in November 2023 shed light on the tense battle between John’s children, Shannon and K.C., over his care and legacy. Shannon has publicly accused her brother of elder abuse, an allegation that K.C. has adamantly denied.

In that interview, Shannon, who transitioned from entertainment executive to medicinal healer, claimed that she had submitted substantial evidence to authorities in Colorado and New Jersey, alleging that K.C. abused their father, gained control of his finances, and isolated him from loved ones. “This situation has impacted not just me, but also his grandchildren, nieces, colleagues, and lifelong friends,” she said.

Shannon further claimed that K.C. had impersonated their father in communications, neglected his medical needs, and damaged his legacy. However, K.C. refuted all the accusations, saying his sister had launched a campaign to tarnish his reputation in hopes of portraying him as “unfit.” He is currently working on a documentary about their father titled America’s Dad.

Shannon’s full Instagram message reflects the profound sadness the family feels:

“I am without words… Our family has received the heartbreaking news that my Dad, John Allen Amos, Jr., transitioned on August 21st.

We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you.

This should be a time of honoring and celebrating his life, yet we are struggling to navigate the wave of emotions and uncertainties surrounding his passing. Still, there is some semblance of peace in knowing my father is finally free.
