British King Charles III has expressed his growing love for Nigerian Pidgin English, giving credit to Afrobeats star Davido for sparking his interest. The monarch reportedly mentioned that Davido’s music made him appreciate Pidgin English and that he hopes to speak it during his next visit to Nigeria.

According to reports, King Charles III acknowledged how Afrobeats is becoming increasingly popular worldwide, and Pidgin English is spreading along with it. His remarks came while introducing his curated playlist, The King’s Music Room, on Apple Music. This playlist features Davido’s song Kante featuring Fave, alongside music from international icons like Beyoncé, Bob Marley, and Miriam Makeba. The selection highlights his admiration for diverse sounds from the Commonwealth.

Interestingly, this isn’t King Charles III’s first attempt at connecting with Pidgin English. During his visit to Nigeria in 2018, he greeted the audience with phrases like “How you dey?” and even responded with “We de try,” as a way of engaging with the local culture. 

The King’s embrace of Afrobeats and Pidgin English further shows the growing influence of Nigerian music and culture worldwide. As Afrobeats continues to rise, more international figures are acknowledging its impact and the unique style it brings to the global entertainment scene.
